History of Fountain Chateau Bed and Breakfast

Fountain Chateau originated from the Hustler Hotel
January 13, 1923 the opening of Traveler's Home Hotel was complete, serving a "Fried Chicken and Dressing dinner with music by Schulz Orchestra. The hotel built by Wm. Talg, operated by his wife Sara boasted "hot and coldwater in every room," "phone connection," "steam heat" and "real home cooking." The cost at $2.50 per day was a reasonable price. Irvin Talg now 96 lived 27 years in his parent's hotel, graduating from New Lisbon High School. Two of Irvin's nieces also live in the area.

The hotel prospered while the highway was routed through Hustler. According to history articles, "Many travelers drove the extra miles to eat and sleep at the Traveler's Home Hotel." However, when the highways were relocated through Camp Douglas the hotel business declined.

The Fountain Lutheran Mission Home, established in 1944 fulfilled their mission as a home for seniors not able to live alone, but still ambulatory. The Home served many area seniors until November, 2008. The building was purchased in January, 2009 and in keeping some of the history of the facility preserved, the name was changed to Fountain Chateau, keeping Fountain as the original name and adding Chateau.

Great care has been given to restore Fountain Chateau as it was during the Traveler's Home Hotel era, including the original maple and fir flooring, the bedrooms redesigned and the doors of each room with transoms and 1920's door locks. The open stair way has been refinished. An original cabinet from the hotel has been refinished for the reception room along with some of the original chairs and a grandfather clock.

The facility was now to become a luxurious historical Bed & Breakfast. There is a beautiful fountain in the reception area, a cozy fireplace, captivating black Henry E. Miller piano and a large flat screen TV located in the living room. Much of the historical building remains in the original form with a touch of elegance and style. Beautiful ornate chandeliers hang from the ceilings with a décor that will create a home away from home atmosphere during our guest visit.

Hustler Wisconsin's History, Attractions & Points of Interest

Fountain Chateau Bed and Breakfast is located in Hustler Wisconsin, a natural year round vacationland, hunters, anglers, bikers, cyclists, canoeists, cross country skiers and snowmobilers, can enjoy acres of parks, trails, abundant wildlife, river streams and lakes.

Hustler, WI is located in Juneau County on County Trunk "A". The village of Hustler is a quiet, safe and friendly community. Settlement began at Hustler shortly after the West Wisconsin Railroad laid track south from camp Douglas in the Early 1870's. A small freight platform and a siding marked the spot of the village, but growth was slow until the 1890's. Hustler owes its name to the post office that sent a list of names to the community and let the villagers choose one. Hustler was the only name on the list that was not already on the Wisconsin map but one story holds that the villagers inserted it themselves and the post office accepted the idea. When the railroad triggered initial community growth, the rerouting of highway 12 through the village between 1926 and 1931 brought good times to the community. The good times lasted until Highway 12 was routed to bypass Hustler. The decline of the railroad and the rerouting of the major highway brought changes to the Hustler community. What was once the Omaha Railroad is now the Omaha Bike Trail.

Fountain Chateau Bed and Breakfast is conveniently located just 30 minutes from Wisconsin Dells. Adjacent to Hustler is the New Lisbon-Camp Douglas area which has a significant amount of diversity ranging from the peacefulness of the Lemonwier River to the thunder of fighter jets flying over Volk Field. From the rustic beauty of the Omaha Bike Trail, which is the connection link to a network of bike trails (including the Elroy-Sparta Trail), to the excitement of water skiing on Castle Rock lake. Whether you're a serious cyclist or someone who enjoys clean country air and taking a leisurely-paced ride on a secluded trail, you'll love this 12 ˝ mile, seal-coated bike trail that features an 875' tunnel.
